On location: Tuolumne County

May/June 2019 California Bountiful magazine

What makes it distinctive? Find out!

Created in 1850 when California achieved statehood, Tuolumne County has long been known for logging and cattle ranching. While not as extensive as in days of yore, timber remains a major component of the county's agricultural scene. National forests and Yosemite National Park cover a good chunk of the county. If you're into history, check out Columbia State Historic Park, which preserves much of the Gold Rush town of Columbia, and Railtown 1897 State Historic Park.

Shaun Crook, Groveland

Crook, and his dad before him, grew up on a cattle ranch his grandfather bought when he moved to the county in the 1950s. "We grew up in the woods," said Crook, who followed his father into the lumber trade. Today, they operate Crook Logging Co., which undertakes harvesting operations for local timber companies. Crook also serves as second vice president of the California Farm Bureau Federation.

Cover's Apple Ranch, Tuolumne

One of the few remaining apple orchards in Tuolumne County, Cover's features homemade baked goods and fresh-pressed cider, all made with apples grown on trees planted in 1929. Families can ride on the miniature train, visit the treehouse and spend time in the barnyard with the animals.

1859 National Hotel and Restaurant, Jamestown

Featuring nine guest rooms, this historic inn offers lunch and dinner daily and brunch on Sunday, plus a wine list made up entirely of vintages from California's gold country. The redwood bar in the saloon could tell some interesting Gold Rush stories, if it could talk.

Hurst Ranch Supply, Jamestown

You can load up on supplies for your own farm, ranch or garden here, or try their wines. The ranch also hosts a fall festival the last two Saturdays in October, featuring train rides, a hay maze and, of course, a pumpkin patch.
