On location: El Dorado County

Sept./Oct. 2016 California Bountiful magazine

The Gold Rush was born in El Dorado County, with the 1848 discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill near Coloma—and the region's rustic charm endures. Visitors can experience historic mining towns, inns and museums, and diverse farm products ranging from apples and Christmas trees to wine, beer and spirits.

Greg Henry, Placerville

Drawing from his study of biodynamic farming and work on farms statewide, Greg Henry of Full Moon Farm grows organic crops including leafy greens, heirloom tomatoes, specialty cantaloupe and Yukon gold potatoes in a 3,000-square-foot tunnel greenhouse. He encourages young people to build a life in agriculture, saying, "People want good food, and young farmers need to come forward, because everyone is on your side to help you."

Quilt Trail

Hand-painted wooden quilt squares adorn barns, historic buildings, gardens and other sites throughout the county. Visitors follow a map to view the blocks, learning a different story from each pattern. Details about the Farm Trails Association/Quilt Trail Project are at http://edc-farmtrails.org.

The Farm Table, Placerville

Using local and seasonal ingredients, the restaurant/market specializes in the farmstead arts of preservation and whole-harvest cookery. Enjoy house-made sausages and charcuterie, pickled vegetables, preserves, condiments, picnic provisions, and local and imported beer and wine.

A mapped community of farms and ranches that began in the 1960s, Apple Hill has grown to comprise 50 stops including U-pick farms, bake shops, wineries, a spa and Christmas tree farms. The area is considered a must-visit destination for the whole family, with peak season running September through November.
