How one company is finding a fan base for their tasty line of exotic vegetables
California is famous for welcoming food from all cultures with open arms—and it seems Asian cuisine and Asian vegetables are no exception.
Asian vegetables are finding a new and growing market as consumers search for innovative ways to incorporate exotic vegetables into their meals. And farmers like those at San Miguel Produce in Oxnard are noticing.
Formed in 1975, San Miguel Produce started out growing celery, lettuce and other leafy greens. But in 2010, with the growing popularity of Thai, Korean and Japanese cuisines, and consumers becoming familiar with Asian vegetables, the company branched out and began Jade Greens, the first ready-to-use line of Asian greens. Today, they sell several different kinds of bok choy, as well as snow pea shoots and various salad kits.
Asian vegetables are some of the most nutrient-dense vegetables in the world. They're high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants, while still being naturally low in calories and fat. The folks at San Miguel Produce hope their new line of vegetables continues to grow in popularity for their flavor, versatility and healthful attributes.
