These northeastern counties ooze history, with agricultural roots that harken back to the Gold Rush. The region has retained its frontier charm, with rugged territory for outdoor adventures, quaint towns, picturesque scenery and diverse wildlife. Families have farmed and ranched here for generations, raising livestock and producing hay, potatoes, timber and vegetables, among other crops and products.

  

Hannah Tangeman-Cheney, Susanville

This is the 102nd year that Hannah Tangeman-Cheney's Hulsman Ranch has been owned and worked by women since its founding by her greatgrandfather in 1862. Offering grass-fed beef and lamb, green-certified timber and meadow-grass hay, Tangeman-Cheney and her sister, Susan Tangeman, shepherd the property following the ethic of their mother and mentor Phyllis Tangeman.

Niles Hotel, Alturas

This renovated historic inn features fine dining, a saloon with a 16-foot Victorian back bar built in 1875 and themed guest quarters, such as the farmhouse "Homestead," western "Lonesome Dove" and vintage "Treadle" rooms.

Lassen Ale Works, Susanville

This brewery and restaurant is housed in the legendary Pioneer Saloon, established in 1862. In honor of the area's cowboys and ranchers, the wall behind the bar is decorated with hand-painted ranch brands.

Bizz Johnson Trail, Westwood

This scenic rails-to-trails route follows the old Fernley and Lassen railroad line, which transported logs and lumber in a bygone era. When snow falls, parts of the trail are open for cross-country skiing. (Photo by Joel Rathje)

A Taste of Beef, A Sip of Wine, Susanville

Lassen County Cattlemen & Cattlewomen host this annual evening event on Feb. 27 at the Elks Lodge, to raise funds for scholarships and school agriculture programs. For details, call 530-257-4323.
