The state's second most populous, San Diego County is home to the most small farms and the most organic farms in the nation. This playground, where surf meets turf and California connects to the next country, is a mix of urban and rural communities from coastal beachfront to mountains to desert—and ornamental, foliage and bedding plants comprise the county's top three crops.

  

John and Janet Kister, Fallbrook

The Kisters founded Sunlet Nursery in 1985 and have since grown the business from 5 acres to 25 acres with 85 employees. Sunlet Nursery provides flowering plants and houseplants to wholesale customers throughout the U.S. Their seasonal inventory varies, based on climate and holidays such as Christmas cactus, amaryllis and rosemary holiday trees at this time of year.

Terra American Bistro, San Diego

Executive chef and cookbook author Jeff Rossman focuses his menu on local and organic farm-to-table dishes such as amber lager braised pot roast, honey miso glazed local fish, cheesy garlic flatbread and steamed Carlsbad mussels.

Garden of Lights, Encinitas

The San Diego Botanic Garden offers year-round activities and displays, but it becomes a magical wonderland most December evenings with more than 100,000 sparkling lights, horse-drawn wagon rides, crafts and more.

Stone Brewing Co. and Stone Farms, Escondido

Enjoy live music and craft beer in the open-air patio and 1-acre organic beer garden. Stone Brewery also features fresh fare from its own 19-acre Stone Farms, just a "hop, skip and jump" away.

Butterflies and Insects, San Diego

Award-winning wildlife photographers capture the beauty of butterflies and other beneficial insects in more than 70 images on display through Jan. 11 at the San Diego Natural History Museum.
