With mountains, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, caverns and national parks, Shasta County is an outdoor enthusiast's playground. Its active volcano, Mount Lassen, rises to 10,455 feet, compared to its valley elevation of 300 to 500 feet. The agriculture here is equally contrasting, with timber, hay and cattle among its top crops.

Don Beaty, Redding

Forestland owner and forestry consultant Don Beaty and his family grow and harvest timber products on about 400 acres. He says he believes in sustainability from growing more than is harvested and recognizing the value and interactions of all forest elements—including watershed, wildlife, tree diversity and aesthetics.

Amethyst Garden, McCloud

Enjoy outdoor views amid the flora and fauna at the historic McCloud Bed and Breakfast Hotel. Originally built in 1915 for lumber mill workers, McCloud Hotel and its garden offer many homemade dishes for breakfast and dinner.

Inter-Mountain Fair, McArthur

Paul Bunyan's Forest Camp, Redding

Visit Redding's Turtle Bay Exploration Park and "go back in time" to 100 years ago. The forest camp includes a museum, animals, hands-on exhibits, play equipment, water feature and amphitheater.
